Like, yeah, that's probably how that would have gone. Sidenote - in Thrice Upon a Time - I liked that after several movies it was reestablished in the third act that Mari and Shinji didn't really know each other - the line about glasses and big boobs had me rollin, and then he called her parachute girl. I agree with the fact that they’ve had their moments but they’ll never end up together. Hiratsuka Sensei is more like a elder sister/friend/well wisher to him rather than a partner.
Why not, ya know? And even with my limited background I think I grasped the concept of the strange 4th wall breaking before Mari shows up to save Shinji. This is one of the most sought out fanfic, and the reason Hachiman won’t end up with Hiratsuka Sensei is because of their age difference. Gendoh sees Yui at the end, we learn who Asuka is and she completes her arc, Shinji says goodbye to Rei, and then him and Mari seem to end up together. Again, perhaps it's bc I don't have other things to compare it to, but I felt fulfilled. And keeping that in context, yes, the ending made me happy. So, my whole understanding of Evangelion comes from these 4 movies. Now, I never watched the different original anime series. I was quite pleased with the ending of Thrice Upon a Time.
